Until this week, Mormons in La Mora thought they had protection from narco violence. That unspoken rule was broken when nine American citizens from their community were ambushed and killed.

In the days since her 18-year-old son breathlessly reported that something terrible had happened to her four grandchildren and daughter-in-law, Loretta Miller has cooked nonstop.

With its sprawling, American-style homes and perfectly manicured lawns, the little town of La Mora stands out amid the landscape of mesquite and cactus. So do the town’s residents: a community of largely blond and blue-eyed families from a breakaway Mormon sect who hold both American and Mexican citizenship.

She said her family has close relationships with the locals, who work in Mormon homes and on their pecan and pomegranate farms. When Miller’s son died last year in a small plane crash, more than 1,000 people showed up to the funeral, she said, and locals hired mariachis to play. Shortly after leaving, LeBaron got a flat tire. The caravan returned home and LeBaron asked Miller: “Do you think that’s a sign that I shouldn’t leave here?” But she left anyway, switching vehicles and heading out again in Miller’s 2011 Suburban.

Horrible tragedy but these fringe religious antagonists poked at everyone around them in a very dangerous place and put their children in harm's way

Cocaine and Meth control mexico. Not the mexican government. If you go to a 3rd world country. You better be ready for a fight at all times.

What makes them more special than other Mexicans?

I don't care what religion (or even none religion) you are, no one deserves to die like that.

How can a rule be broken if it's not even a rule?

Why ? Are they suppose to be more special than regular Mexicans?

Those poor people who suffered that tragedy were NOT Mormons. They were an unsanctioned sect. Previously identified as a polygamist cult. I am so sorry this happened, but do better .

For Mexico ambush victims, there was no safety in numbersThe Mexican government has suggested the attack on members of a Mormon community was a case of mistaken identity. The victims' relatives say the group was targeted. What’s being missed is that all the “recreational” drug users in America and elsewhere have blood on their hands when killings by drug cartels take place. Demand drives supply. How recreational is being ultimately responsible for the killing of human beings? There’s more to this story ... This group committed crimes in the US They lived in Mexico & were not just visiting ... that doesn’t mean Mexico is safe ... Drug Cartels are very powerful there.
