A group of Chicago civil rights attorneys signed a letter to Mayor Lori Lightfoot Wednesday asking her to withdraw an ordinance introduced in September which aims to allow the fining of gang members and gives police the authority to seize their property.
“We regularly represent Chicagoans who bear the brunt of CPD’s unlawful, racist policing,” the letter says. “Our clients don’t just want to be free from state violence — they want to live in safe, healthy, thriving communities. But for the reasons described further below, the Victims Justice Ordinance will only further the inequities that plague our city.
Asked about criticism of the plan, Lightfoot on Tuesday said her administration needs to do more to “educate the public” about the ordinance. Sheila Bedi, one of the civil rights attorneys who signed the letter, said the letter is signed on by attorneys who have often filed lawsuits against the police department and have been responsible for the city spending over half a billion dollars in legal fees and judgements related to police misconduct.
Whose side are these guys in anyway?
Both of these groups are playing violins while the city burns. They should be embarrassed, but neither party will be.
So the “civil rights” people are supporting the gang bangers. Not news to anyone.
This doesn’t appear to be terrible idea, did the Mayor provide specifics as to how abuse will be prevented? Already appears better than civil forfeiture since the property doesn’t go to CPD. Is it not possible to create a threshold to prove one is engaged in illegal activity?
Exactly why crime is out of control in the first place.
What this city needs to do is adopt a RICO style ordinance, yes, take their cars, their gold chains and whatever else they have.
Of course give them everything..... Nothing for victims... Stupid victims..... HELP THE CRIMINALS!
I'd propose a commercial for the city encouraging more kids to join gangs and let the violence continue. Heck! set a new homicide record '800 huh? rookies'
