SEATTLE — Drivers entering westboundin Seattle from Montlake Boulevard will have an easier, more efficient path beginning Monday, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.
The department said the lanes will make a big difference in easing traffic congestion in the area. Drivers previously had to take a circuitous route that included extra mileage passing by the highway, followed by an awkward U-turn merge onto the southbound lanes. "I think it's going to help unclog northbound Montlake for a lot of drivers," said Steve Peer, a spokesman for WSDOT.
More than 40,000 drivers travel through that intersection every day. Peer said it may take some time for people to get used to, but people headed both northbound and southbound on Montlake will see the benefit. SR 520 and Montlake BoulevardOverall, the project aims to improve transportation for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians along the corridor and build a new, three-acre lid covering the highway, which will include transit stops and open green space, according to WSDOT.
By the late 2020s, the department aims to have replaced all of SR 520's bridges with stronger structures, extend bus and carpool lanes and a regional bicycle/pedestrian path from Seattle to Redmond and construct safer on- and off-ramps with improved connections to transit and local streets.
