Moonrise: Tedeschi Trucks Band bringing epic new music to Alabama

When the Tedeschi Trucks Band hits Mobile and Tuscaloosa on June 25 and 26, the fans on hand will be among the first to hear live performances from an astoundingly ambitious companion piece to a pillar of classic rock.

The latest iteration of the band’s “Wheels of Soul” summer tour, featuring Los Lobos and Gabe Dixon, opens June 24 in Jacksonville, Fla. On Saturday, June 25, it comes to the Mobile Civic Center Arena. On Sunday, June 26, the band will appear at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater. Derek Trucks recently took some time to talk about a project that could only have happened in the shutdown brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. The following has been lightly edited for clarity.When you get to the end of the long-form video for “Crescent,” the credits include the line “Album concept by Mike Mattison.” That sounds like an interesting moment.“Mike has been, we’ve been together for maybe 15, 17 years, back to my solo group.

“You’re also thinking of each album standing on its own. The story arc of the whole project, you kind of want to mirror that in some way inside of each record. So there’s those big moments … where you feel that moment of ‘Uh oh, maybe things aren’t going to work out.’ But then you want to lay it down. You want to lay it down in a place that feels a little bit hopeful.
