Moon Knight’s Oscar Isaac shares the advice Robert Downey Jr. gave him on joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Since first appearing as Tony Stark in 2008’s Iron Man, Downey has become the unofficial godfather of the MCU. Downey retired his character in Avengers: Endgame, paving the way for new heroes to make their mark in the MCU’s Phase 4. Moon Knight premiered on Disney+ on March 30 and introduces Isaac as one of those heroes - or, rather, anti-heroes.
Thanks to roles in films like the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis, Disney’s Star Wars sequel trilogy, and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, Isaac has established himself as one of the most talented and in-demand actors in Hollywood. Since the 2020 announcement that he would star in Disney+’s Moon Knight, Isaac has admitted he was hesitant to join the MCU. Unfamiliar with Marvel Studios’ process, Isaac asked the MCU’s Tony Stark for advice.
I did talk to Robert Downey Jr. quite a bit. I talked to him a lot. I mean, he's a friend already, and so just talking to him about it and just what his sense of it is and how his process has been, and he was such a great great person to talk to, obviously about the whole thing. And also, for me, the biggest inspiration, because to this day, still, that first Iron Man movie is just so good...
Isaac has talked about being drawn to Moon Knight’s Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift shop employee suffering from dissociative identity disorder . In the comics, Moon Knight’s primary persona is that of Marc Spector, a mercenary who makes a pact with the Egyptian moon god, Khonshu. Moon Knight episode 1 makes the “bold” decision to lock itself into the perspective of Steven, who is not only unaware of his DID, but of Marc and Khonshu as well.
Isaac’s costar, Ethan Hawke, has praised Marvel Studios for giving the cast and crew the creative freedom to make mistakes while exploring Moon Knight’s characters and story. Jon Favreau’s Iron Man famously began production with an incomplete script, allowing for Downey & Co. to improvise a lot of dialogue - which clearly set a precedent for Marvel’s collaborative process.
