“If you look closely at all the faces that are on that monument, no faces are smiling. They’re all in different degrees of grief,” he said.
Rhonda Blackmore, commanding officer of the Saskatchewan RCMP, said the monument puts a huge spotlight on an ugly part of Canadian history, in which the Mounties have a role. “I have family that went through the Indian Residential School System. We have RCMP officers in our ranks that are ’60s Scoop survivors,” he said, describing this as almost having “a foot in both worlds” while wearing the uniform and representing their nations.Article content
