A Montgomery man has pleaded guilty to a fatal shooting that happened in 2021 and has been sentenced.
According to Montgomery County District Attorney Daryl Bailey, Marquis Phillips pleaded guilty to killing Dequan Johnson. Judge Jimmy Pool sentenced Phillips, who was charged with capital murder, to life in prison. Bailey says Phillips is a repeat criminal offender. He says Phillips led police on a car chase after shooting Johnson., on February 16, 2021, police were called to a hotel on Express Drive near Troy Highway where they found a crashed vehicle. Inside, they found Johnson, who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead on the scene. The hotel was damaged by the crash.
Bailey says detectives identified Phillips and another person on the hotel’s surveillance video. The video showed both men approaching Johnson’s vehicle and shooting him multiple times. Police say the day after the shooting, on February 17, they were patrolling in the 500 Block of Eastdale Road. While patrolling, they observed a man wanted for a felony warrant. After units attempted to make contact with the vehicle, a pursuit ensued ending in the 3400 Block of Thomas Avenue. That’s where Phillips and co-defendant J’Hance Gillium of Montgomery were arrested.
