A U.S. Navy sailor from Monterey Park secretly transmitted plans for a massive naval exercise in the Pacific Ocean and also sent information about security systems at the Port Hueneme naval base in Ventura County to a Chinese intelligence agent in exchange for cash, a federal grand jury alleges in an indictment.
FBI agents and Naval criminal investigators arrested Petty Officer Wenheng “Thomas” Zhao, 26, on Wednesday, Aug. 2, for what the grand jury said was a nearly two-year scheme to record and photograph the sensitive military secrets then furnish them to the agent working for the People’s Republic of China.
According to the indictment, which was filed last week, Zhao began sending information to the agent in August 2021 and continued doing so until at least this May.Zhao is expected to be arraigned in a downtown Los Angeles courtroom Thursday afternoon. He had not yet been assigned an attorney.
