Their is a happy medium. Regular cellphones still exist. You can give your child a way to contact you in an emergency without giving them a smart phone.

It just proves how much smarter, stronger, and more prepared for life boomers are then this subset of sorry-ass losers who think not having a phone available is a death sentence. We somehow made it through life without them! BOOM!
Yeah I guess writing down phone numbers on a piece of paper and educating your child how to deal with life's mis-haps was all too hard.

Its not hard to find a policeman in Manhattan. A lost child can walk into any business of any kind and get help immediately. This is simply silly, I don’t care who gives their kid a phone and who don’t but this is nonsense. I think ABC must be run by video game playing teenagers.

She had good intentions not wanting her kids glued to apps all day. A flip phone seems like a perfectly reasonable choice, though I hope kids still feel they can approach safe adults and that they know the phone numbers for their parents. We don't know anyone's number anymore!

If you don't want your kid to have a smartphone that young, that's okay. But not having any kind of communication device PERIOD is a dangerous decision. Thankfully this worked out okay but a preventable problem

Glad this was in the 70's or 80's this kid would still be lost.
I grew up running round the streets of the 60s & 70s East End of London. I survived, so did all of my friends. My parents didn't write a newspaper article about it. 🤷🏽♂️ Also I wouldn't let MY kids navigate NYC on their own at that age, with a phone or without! Horrible parenting.
I'm against the idea of flip phones because they aren't culturally popular since the smartphone era. If you're that person who still uses old school technology I don't want to be near you because there's MORE ways to communicate than just calling and texting somebody! 🤦♂️🙄😒

40 years ago, my parents wouldn't have let me walk anywhere alone in LA at the age of 10 or 11. I definitely wouldn't do it today, phone or no phone. And, yes, I was able to navigate just fine once I was older, thank you, and I didn't get a phone until I was 25.

None of my four children was or will be allowed a cellphone until 13 years old. Seeing a nine year old glued to a cellphone is just ridiculous. Parents use them like a leash / babysitter.
As kids, we roamed the streets, got lost, and survived crazy things, without smartphonesphones attached to our bodies. It's a wonder we lived. (Of course, we're all too cagey & presumptuous now.) TeachYourKidsCritical ThinkingSkills

Why live in a world of technology if you can't use it. Phones & smart devices are the swiss army knives of today.
