“There are still some values to be found,” he said. “There’s a lot of enthusiasm over the midcentury resources down here.” While the area has some notable annual house and garden walks, Mehaffey said the focus on midcentury modern style is designed to draw interest not just locally but from the broader community of architecture enthusiasts in the Chicago area and beyond.

The first Modernism Road Rally took place in 2021 in Geneva, St. Charles and Batavia, but the pandemic limited viewings to the exteriors of all homes. Only 75 people took part the first time around, but this year more than 300 tickets had already been sold as of last week, according to Mehaffey.This year's Modernism Road Rally tour of homes in Flossmoor and Olympia Fields will offer access to interior spaces of homes designed by famous architectural firms such as Keck & Keck.
