) - Many of us have a fire alarm in our home — but when is the last time you checked to see if yours works?
Having a sufficient, working fire alarm could mean life or death. That’s why the Mobile Fire-Rescue Department brought its Smoke Alarm Blitz program to the Morningside neighborhood Saturday’s, installing free fire alarms.MFRD’s Capt. Dwight Smith said the smoke alarms are free and the event is an effort between several local organizations.
“We try to bring in our co-enforcers to help us canvas the area. And when I say canvas, that means we go from door to door trying to install smoke alarms in everybody’s house,” he said. “Smoke alarms cannot prevent a fire, but it can mitigate the loss of property and especially the loss of life,” Smith said.
The day is also heavily educational. Mobile Fire-Rescue brought in their fire safety trailer to demonstrate to kids and adults the danger of cooking fires, electrical fires and how to remain safe during those types of emergencies.Officials said Saturday’s event was made possible through the assistance of Morningside Elementary, 1-800-BoardUp, Delta Sigma Theta Mobile Alumnae Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, the MFRD, and many others.
