Lisa Baker was one of the first people in line to drop off her recycling material at Mobile 's new Parkway Recycling Center on Dauphin Island Parkway that opened Monday morning.
"It's a lot more convenient. So that I don't have to go across town just to do my recycling," said Baker."What this does is it opens it up to a whole other region of the city for folks who are wanting to recycle for a long time, but they just didn't want to drive across the entire city," said Director of Public Services Marc Vassallo.
The drive through drop off site is .3 of a mile south of 1-10 and open 7 days a week, but the city is no longer accepting glass as of April 1st this year. Chief Resilience Officer Casi Callaway says cost is the main reason. "We realized that glass was the heaviest component of our recycling. We pay a per ton cost. And then because we crush it, it ended up being the biggest detractor for the Emerald Coast Utilities of the Material Recovery Facility where we take it. Broken shards of glass can cause, can wreak havoc on the system," said Callaway.
Callaway says the new site cost about $250,000 and was primarily funded with a grant from the state. It's only open to Mobile residents. The other two locations are the Pinehill Recycling Center near Mobile Police headquarters and the Museum Drive Recycling Center near the Mobile Museum of Art.
