A man from Moab was arrested in Colorado for allegedly starting multiple fires, including one that destroyed police patrol vehicles, at Fort Lewis College.

by Victoria Hill, KUTVSecurity cameras at Fort Lewis College in Colorado captured video of a suspect, later identified as a student from Moab, accused of lighting fires on campus on March 10, 2024. The investigation began on the morning of March 10, when first responders were called to the Fort Lewis College football field on reports of smoke coming from the press box.

A local fire department extinguished the flames and began a joint investigation with multiple agencies to determine the cause. Fort Lewis Drive was closed on March 11 as part of their investigation, which ultimately led to Maher-Young's arrest.He faces charges related to the two separate arsons that took place on March 10.

"The incidents damaged the football field press box and destroyed police vehicles," officials stated. "We recognize it has been a tense few days for all of the FLC Community. We would like to thank all of the agencies involved, including those who provided support throughout this time, including the Fort Lewis College Physical Plant."

The collaborative investigation included assistance from the Fort Lewis College Police Department, Durango Police Department, La Plata County Sheriff’s Office, Durango Fire Protection District, Colorado Bureau of Investigation, and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives.
