The new era of baseball’s pitch clock began, with some admirably short spring training games and a couple of gaffes that show how much getting used to it will take

MLB’s new pitch clock had its first signature moment in the ninth inning of a spring training exhibition game between the Boston Red Sox and Atlanta Braves on Saturday. With two outs, the bases loaded, and a full count, Atlanta batter Cal Conley was called for a third strike after the umpire determined he had not been ready and in the batter’s box with enough time left on the pitch clock.

Because it was an exhibition game—in which extra innings aren’t played—the automatic strike also ended the game.

How much time will this save per game

Basebore: too slow / too boring / games can't even start on time.

Artificial turf, O-T, sudden death O-T, extra innings, no steroids, blood doping. It’s just a F n game to 99.9% of us. Stop with the pink undies on the QB and play the damn game.

We need this rule to increase our fan base.

The entire idea of a 'pitch clock' is insane. It's the Umpire's job to ensure the game takes place as a good pace and not drag on to become an Opera.

Basketball (college and NBA) stopped being a sport the moment a 'shot clock' was implemented. Well, guess we can now add baseball to the list of 'non-sports' too.

Padres slugger Machado draws first pitch clock violationTick, tock, Manny Machado. Better watch that pitch clock. Baseball’s new timing device made its big league debut Friday during a limited schedule of spring training openers and wouldn’t you know it, it was Machado, the San Diego Padres’ All-Star slugger, not a pitcher, who was called for the first violation. Machado? Okay I take back everything critical I said about these new rules, I love them! I already hate it. Good. A Major League batter steps up to the batter's box, and scatches and spits and adjusts and pulls and wiggles and farts and sits there guaranteed to watch the first pitch go by! Why'd you have to do all that just to take a strike?
