When Ralph Ellison died, in April, 1994, at the age of eighty, he had been working on his second novel for forty years. That novel had been awaited more keenly, perhaps, than any other in American literary history. And yet Ellison refused to keep to any timetable but his own. He was still working on “the transitions,” he told anyone who asked. Ellison’s début, of course, had been extraordinary.
