Foster Owen wears a Jamaica hat as he plays dominoes Sunday, Aug. 7, 2022, at the Houston Missouri City Domino Club in Missouri City. Several dozen people gathered for a fundraiser celebrating the anniversary of Jamaican independence.Just a little south of a neighborhood in Missouri City, there’s only fields, a one-lane road and a small unassuming gray building. It was a little more lively than usual Sunday afternoon, with Caribbean style music, chatter and laughter filling the air.

Providing a sense of home is exactly why the organization began in the first place. The club began unofficially in the ‘80s, the founding members would get together and play dominoes in each others’ homes. They officially started the organization in 2009. The group competes in tournaments in Dallas, Kansas City, Atlanta and throughout the Houston region. Members often come on Friday or Sunday nights for a match and stay into the early hours of the morning playing.

He also stressed that the organization is about more than the game. It's also about giving back to the community. They’ll use the space to host birthday celebrations and funeral services for little or no charge.
