FAIRBANKS, Alaska - After being bailed out of jail on May 16, 2004, Avi Keys told his father that he was going away for a few days before his upcoming court dates. Those few days have stretched into decades, and Keys has not been seen or heard from since.
Court records say that Keys had an established record of methamphetamine use, and that he had a prior arrest record for assault and hindering prosecution.Avi Keys and some of his associates - Jason Fisher, David Mason and Josiah Thurneau - were reportedly high on a methamphetamine binge for the past three days. They were driving down the Steese Highway on May 13 when, for no clear reason, Fisher shot Mason twice in the head, killing him.
Around the beginning of June, someone noticed the smell coming from the trunk of Fisher’s car in the impound lot, and Mason’s body was discovered. Although it took a full year for Mason to be identified, the case moved fairly quickly after that. Fisher, 16 months after the killing, pleaded no contest to second degree murder, and is now serving an 82-year sentence. Thurneau testified in exchange for immunity.
