Miss Manners: When people call me ‘the Bionic Woman’ they think it’s funny but it makes me feel like a freakI have had my hips, knees and ankles replaced, and have had four back surgeries, all due to an orthopedic disease. I sometimes have braces on my hands to help me tolerate the pain.
I would especially like to know what to say on physically painful days, when I am feeling bad already. I am sure others with much worse conditions probably hear comments that sting, too. GENTLE READER: Perhaps the “bionic” reference is intended to make your situation seem empowering. It is still inexcusable and not funny. As it is being repeated, you would be justified in saying, “Please retire that joke. I’m actually in pain.”
