: I have a dear friend who lived in the same city I lived in for many years. Several years ago, I moved to the other side of the continent, and she now visits me once a year for seven to 10 days.Miss Manners: Is this an odd note to get from a crossing guard?

She says nothing to me about her sleeping preferences, but she has done this on every single visit. I don’t know how to address it, or even if I should. I don’t want to embarrass her, but cleaning the rug is time-consuming and creates unnecessary wear on the fibers. Such an approach has the downside of being an implicit promise to correct any deficiencies — and lacks the simplicity of swapping out the rug before her next visit.: My son has been dating his girlfriend for about six months. In many ways, they are compatible and good for each other. I am happy for him.
