CLEVELAND, Ohio — The Misericordia Cougars took a big lead and then held off Wisconsin-Whitewater, 10-5, on Thursday to capture the NCAA Division III baseball championship at Classic Park, home of the Lake County Captains.
The Cougars, who won Tuesday’s series opener, 12-9, had lost earlier Thursday to the Warhawks, 16-10. That set up the decisive Game 3 later in the day. The Cougars jumped out to a 7-0 lead after the first inning and scored two more times in the third before the Warhawks got their offense going. Trailing 10-2 in the eighth, the Warhawks got back three runs, two of which came on a throwing error.
Misericordia starter Connor Maryniak went 7 1/3 innings, giving up five runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Cougars third baseman Gabe Bunn went 4 for 4 with three runs and three RBI.
