Crying, shaking uncontrollably and biting her lip, Miranda Casarez insisted to the jury that a day earlier had convicted her of killing her stepson that she had not starved or hurt him in any way. The jury was deliberating her sentence for injury to a child by omission causing serious bodily injury, a first degree felony, late Thursday afternoon. She faces up to life in prison.
Asked again by Cantrell, she admitted she sent it but said the words came from Cervera, who she said dictated her text messages about Benji. “I don’t know how long I can take this. This f---ing kid, my son can’t sleep because of this little 5-year-old that everyone thinks is so perfect… I’m done This kid needs a good one,” said the text. Casarez insisted that she did not single out Benji, that she loved him and treated him as her own.
