Vying for the Democratic nomination for county judge, Judge Peter Sakai and state Rep. Ina Minjarez would bring different types of experience to the role.

In the highest-profile local race in the May 24 primary, former Judge Peter Sakai and state Rep. Ina Minjarez are vying for a spot on the November ballot for county judge. The end of Democrat Nelson Wolff’s two-decade run as the county executive represents a turning point for Bexar County government.

The winner of the runoff will face Republican Trish DeBerry, the former Precinct 3 county commissioner who stepped down from her seat to run for county judge. Minjarez brings experience from the Texas Legislature, where she has represented San Antonio’s Westside District 124 since 2015. Sakai brings knowledge of the county’s judicial system gained from 26 years on the bench in the 225th District Court.
