But to date there has been little independent assessment of how the radioactive waste produced by SMRs would compare with that from their large-scale peers.at Stanford University in California and her colleagues used data NuScale Power has shared publicly with US authorities to assess the technology, and extrapolated to model the waste from three different SMR technologies. They compared the SMR technology with a conventional 1.
The study suggests that SMRs produce higher volumes and greater complexity of waste because they are naturally less efficient. SMRs leak more neutrons out of their core than a larger reactor, meaning they cannot maintain the self-sustaining reaction for as long. Diane Hughes at NuScale Power says the study relies on outdated information and its waste per unit of energy compares favourably with large reactors. “We don’t agree with the conclusion that the NuScale design creates more used spent fuel per unit of energy compared to currently operating light water reactors,” she says.
I suggest that we continue to research mini nuclear reactors, to see if there are ways to reduce the amount of waste they generate.
As lower price the ships fuels as you can reduce the goods prices. Thus, why you did not use renewable energy and Lithuim batteries on trading ships to realese some of world economy problems
Smart laws are needed that respect the sustainability and future effects of the application. We just have to think! Work is for robots, thinking is for humans! Robots need to become more efficient and humans more educated! We don't need scrap in either case.
☢️ The world will also overcome this problem of nuclear waste. They need to be transported, stored and neutralized. Need is the mother of inventions! Science will find a solution. 👍 Until then, clear and mandatory procedures for the use of this equipment are required.🙏
No easy solutions to nuclear waste and spent fuel...issue as big as Yucca 🏔️...often w/real risk ⚡ NIMBY along with high cost to build, high cost to operate & heavy regulations = flat capacity Nuclear power generation has the highest cost so 🚫 new 💰...more to renewables
Why do so many smart people have the most enormous blind spots to the unsolved problem of nuclear waste and the fragility of nuclear in a destabilizing world? Is it cos there's no safe way out of this hole we've dug for ourselves with fossil fuels, whatever way you look?
Are being touted by whom?
When the power is cheap and easy humans are using it as if there is no tomorrow. That always ends ugly.
Mini nuclear power stations = major disaster.
So they're a bit shit, really? Good to know.
But is it as radioactive as 'traditional'/the widespread types of nuclear reactors we currently use, that are made to create bi-products for use in nuclear bombs? We had safe nuclear reactor designs in the 60's, and an actual functioning one. Make those; Molten Salt Reactors/MSRs

“More”.. ok, how much more? All of the waste from nuclear power since 1950 can fit on a football field and has not once had a harmful impact. An easy trade off for the benefits of nuclear power. Quit fearmongering
Climate doomsdayers are going to need to pick a trade off: 1) move everyone to renewables tomorrow and cause millions of deaths 2) move to modular nuclear tomorrow and have more nuclear waste 3) or gradually build out renewables and modern nuclear + modular nuclear over 25 years
Cool.

But they are safer if they meltdown
Old tweet for an article published on May 30. Any news ? We are June 7.
What a terrible article and based around ‘extrapolations’ from one SMR design, the RollsRoyceUK SMR is based on conventional fuels and technologies where this is looking at a Gen IV reactor that has a number of novel technologies… 🤦♂️

Are these required to power the new generation of supercomputers?
We've had 70 years to figure out how to make nuclear power feasible on a larger scale, and it's yet to happen. Time to get on with it and push those resources into developing renewables.
