Millions without power in Texas as snow storm slams US

A winter storm dropping snow and ice sent temperatures plunging across the southern Plains, prompting a power emergency in Texas a day after conditions canceled flights and impacted traffic across large swaths of the U.S.

“We’re living through a really historic event going on right now,” said Jason Furtado, a professor of meteorology at the University of Oklahoma, pointing to all of Texas under a winter storm warning and the extent of the freezing temperatures. “This event was well beyond the design parameters for a typical, or even an extreme, Texas winter that you would normally plan for. And so that is really the result that we’re seeing,” Woodfin said.

A Harris County Public Health facility storing the vaccines lost power between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. on Monday and its backup generator also failed, said Rafael Lemaitre, a spokesman for Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo. Most government offices and schools were closed for Presidents Day, and authorities pleaded with residents to stay home. Louisiana State Police reported that it had investigated nearly 75 weather-related crashes caused by a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain in the past 24 hours.

There are human lives at stake. The Harris County Judge (4M population) just did a press conference educating residents on how to recognize hypothermia. They redeployed 8,500 vaccines because the Public Health Dept.’s generators failed.

The snow “will miraculously dissappear and go away one day. They will wake up one day and it will be miraculously gone!

Can Americans take the trouble to post temperatures in Celsius as well, so the rest of the world can sympathize with them?

The headline is that the states power grid failed in multiple areas due to the cold and 2 million were taken OFF power during historic deadly cold temps, not that the storm knocked out power. Failure of state leadership & ERCOT leadership that may result in deaths.
