Large U.S. cities lost tens of thousands of millennial and younger Gen X residents last year, according to Census figures released Thursday that offer fresh signs of cooling urban growth.
Cities with more than a half million people collectively lost almost 27,000 residents age 25 to 39 in 2018, according to a Wall Street Journal analysis of the figures. It was the fourth consecutive year that big cities saw this population of young adults shrink. New York, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Washington and Portland,...
With ever evolving communication technology, more and more people have options to work remotely/home. That way they can avoid higher city rent/living expenses. Maybe we don’t need the amount of construction that’s undergoing right now
Well after they mess it up call for global warming and everything else I might as well leave it
Welcome to Columbus
I am “ younger Gen X” and am done with millennial and Boomer. We are the glue that cares.
Well, not quite.
They need to stay there. The liberal element is ruining conservative towns and states. Ask Texas and Idaho.
Because they began to have kids?
Chances are pretty good that anyone moving anywhere is in one of those categories.
Why- have friends whose children have children who want out because of the schools and social unrest
Wait so they don’t like high taxes
People are trying to get the hell out of big cities before the S hits the fan.
Thank you Captain Obvious. Hey, this could be... like... The Great Millenial Migration. Yeah. That’s THE STORY. So... wait.. now Millenials have ruined migrations? Boom. Millennials CaptainObvious
Interesting
Leftists politicians at play? Screwing up young people’s dreams welcome to the club the leftists democrat screws everyone
Yeah because they renting them to death.
Inflation. It's too expensive, and jobs are generally temporary and unable to offer good pay, even when they claim otherwise. To further exemplify this crisis, apartments are nearly $5k a month, and having roommates isn't a long term solution when trying to formalize a family.
Well surely, you are not going to pretend, that the majority of young people, have any chance of being able to afford to live in these cities. Or do you live in a parallel universe.
Wages have not significantly risen and housing is affordable. Middle class is dying. Not surprising.
That’s weird 🤔
Where they at do...!!
Smart move 😎
Most of the folks who can still afford to live in these cities are the ones that bought 20+ years ago. The younger generations aren’t leaving because they don’t want to live there...they just can’t afford it.
Such a shame but not surprising when you consider the astronomical cost of living in these great metropolises. Worst part is it's usually the keen young professionals that would see the cities through their next wave of progress.
Too many large cities are too god damn expensive. When I lived in Boston the lack of affordable housing was one of the big secondary factors driving an attempt to unionize for better pay at the store we worked at (Rochester is more affordable but it’s getting pricier every day)
Where did they go and why? Or do I have to subscribe to find out?
They can’t afford large cities much like they can’t afford to get past your paywall.
YOu build luxury condos that are sold for multiple millions to chinese and russian rich individuals that will never inhabit them.... it is the priority. Young adults are not a priority.
Probably tired of left wing economics but IDK
And possibly the Democratic Party
Well when a studio Apartment goes from $1300 -2000 a month yes they will leave.
The modern American dream is traveling from city to city in search of the ideal mix of affordable housing and decent paying jobs
Thank you for acknowledging that GenX still exists!
Cities are garbage and run by Democrats
Lets take NYC. You live in a box. Pay Fed, state, city, MTA tax. Get harassed by bums on a daily basis. Or move to a state like TX and buy a 3/2 home for what you paid for a room in NY with no state income tax and sensible property taxes.
So we're going to act like only Young folks leave the city. Have you ever heard of Florida?
Funny, they support democrats and government control, then run from the cities and urban areas that democrats do control.
not lost - just moved to the streets
That’s fine, just leave your BS politics there
The Wall Street Journal is a fucking trash version of a paper
Good. Maybe housing costs will begin to fall to where this gen x-er could afford. Always wanted to live in DC proper.
Move to the south. Cost of living is insanely low and there’s more to do then you’d think.
Oh why don't you fools stop this Democrat impeachment nonsense which is going nowhere and let the market work? President Trump has done nothing wrong! It is this RENEGADE CONGRESS RUINING OUR COUNTRY!!! GET A BACKBONE!!
Yes! Everyone, please leave. Leave the city for the real ones. Ps - I am a millennial.
you will never catch me in any of those big city's nothing but criminal thugs i just hope they dont come out too the country where i live but they better know i cary 3 guns on me at all times!
I live in one of the biggest cities in Texas. It has some upsides to it, but I actually hate it. It takes forever to get anywhere, the roads are packed with traffic & potholes and the crime rate is constantly on the rise (and so is the rate of homelessness). IWantSmallTownLife
Come now. Tell the people why these Millenials are leaving urban centers. Because their were gentrified or forced out of their traditional homes by corrupt black politicans who commit slow-motion against their own kithe and kin to please the whites.
Good idea.
