Fri, April 19th 2024 at 9:25 AMRobert Card, the gunman in the Lewiston mass shooting, is seen on body camera during a interview with New York State Police at National Guard base in the state.
This is a direct response to pressure from the U.S. Senate in the wake of the Lewiston mass shooting. An investigation after the shootings revealed that the gunman had severe brain damage, likely linked to repeated concussive blasts from years training with hand grenades in the Army and Army Reserves.During a hearing on Capitol Hill, and under questioning from Maine Senator Angus King, Secretary of the Army Christine Wormuth said they're going to start new screenings and cognitive testing in the next few months.
“Starting this June, we will be doing a cognitive assessment on every new soldier coming into basic training. To set a baseline, exactly, to where they are before they start getting exposed as they go do training,” Wormuth said. “High school football teams have been doing that for years, by the way. It's nice that we're going to start. Well, we're going to start doing it this June, again, every single new soldier,” King said. The Army secretary said they're also looking at additional personal protective equipment, including wearable gauges to better understand the forces service members are being exposed to.
