"Good intentions... but kind of ill-conceived."One Mississippi middle school is backing off its plan to offer shapewear to girls dealing with"body image" issues.
When Ashley Heun’s daughter brought home a school letter requesting her signature, she read it several times before realizing“I decided words and social media is a good tool and I would use that to rally the troops to change this and to really let the school know how exactly tone-deaf it was,” Heun, 45, told TODAY.
The letter asks parents for their permission for school counselors to offer middle school girls shapewear and bras. The school has since ended the program. In the letter from Southaven Middle School sent Tuesday, parents received information about helping girls develop a healthy body image. The school's solution? Shapewear, in part.
The Southaven, Mississippi stay-at-home mom of a teenage girl and 11-year-old son said she felt “really angry” and wrote the school with her concerns. In response, Heun heard back on Wednesday and received an apology in person from the principal at school, who told her they have decided to cancel this program. This is what was sent home with my 8th grade daughter at Southaven Middle School. All girls were sent home with this letter. I’m appalled at the fact that they are trying to fix “negative body image” by sending home SHAPEWEAR!
TODAYshow Why don't they offer nutrition information or free physical training?
TODAYshow 🤨I’d rather the very same dollars go to providing classes EDUCATING YOUNG MEN on behavior and sexual responsibility. How about that? EAHWP bipolarclub
TODAYshow Wait, what?! This is so harmful!
TODAYshow The schools could then make money by selling calenders with the girls on them.
TODAYshow So, nearly 25% of kids age 10-17 in MS. are clinically obese, and instead of teaching healthier habits and instilling self-esteem values that are not based on body image types, MS is offering Spanks and push-up bras? What the actual EFF?!?
TODAYshow Southaven is Memphis south. We don’t even claim it.
TODAYshow This the party of small government again?
TODAYshow Mississippi. 👀 SMH.
TODAYshow Sounds like Mississippi logic
TODAYshow This was the winning idea? Someone actually said this and people agreed with it? Also, don’t wear it under shorts and a tank top or you’ll be sent home for being a distraction. WTF.
TODAYshow This cant be real
TODAYshow i'm an xxs this is not inclusive enough
TODAYshow Wouldn’t the shape wear just lower their esteem more? Sound like a very bad idea!
TODAYshow a yearbook full of filtered pictures
TODAYshow Excuse me, what?! “If young girls have a negative body image, they just need some spanx so they can squeeze and smooth out the fat on their bodies.” A school employee came up w this idea, got funding (nothing happens in a school without $), and sent this to parents. 🤯
TODAYshow I would reasonably ask whether low income families may need assistance in providing undergarments such as a bra for girls reaching puberty, noting that access to menstrual products are an economic issue. That said 'shape wear' seems age-inappropriate.
TODAYshow And they wonder why young teen girls get eating disorders. GEEEZ.
TODAYshow Believing in you was never what I had in mind giving it a try was , but you came out being legit thanks mariadbates2

TODAYshow WTH!!!!
TODAYshow 1) Teaching children to be ashamed of their bodies is what causes body image issues. 2) Boys have body image issues too. 3) None of these morons should ever be allowed within 100 miles of a school.
TODAYshow So typical of uneducated southerners.
TODAYshow Matt Gaetz must’ve consulted on this…
