NIR OZ, Israel — Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday visited Nir Oz, a kibbutz in southern Israel, where he visited the home of a family, most of them American citizens, who were killed on Oct. 7. The charred exterior of the home of the Kedem Siman Tov family, and other homes burned or damaged in the attack, sat in contrast to the kibbutz’s green and placid surroundings, where bougainvillea and palm trees lined neat pathways, children’s play areas and lawns.
Israeli officials said that the trucks inspected at Kerem Shalom come from Egypt, typically carrying supplies — shoes, onions or lentils, for example — that are initially offloaded at the Egyptian port of Arish before being driven into Israel for inspection. Once they are inspected at Kerem Shalom they can be taken directly into Gaza there or brought up to another, recently opened crossing, but must be unloaded from Egyptian trucks and reloaded onto trucks within Gaza.
