Microsoft is the latest company to move to a 'discretionary time off' policy, which it says 'aligns with more flexible ways of working.'

Microsoft Corp. is switching to a policy of unlimited time off for its salaried U.S. workforce, the company's chief people officer told employees Wednesday.

The Redmond, Wash.-based software maker is making the shift to what it calls"discretionary time off" on Jan. 16. Workers with unused vacation time will get a payout in April, according to an internal memo from Chief People OfficerThe policy will also include 10 corporate holidays, leaves of absence and time off for sick days, mental health days, jury duty and bereavement.

Microsoft-owned LinkedIn has its own DTO policy, which it adopted before being acquired by Microsoft in 2016. Other companies such as Netflix Inc., Salesforce.com Inc., General Electric Co. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. have unlimited time off policies as well. The policy can benefit employers, as there won't be accrued vacation time to pay out to employees when they leave the company., a senior developer advocate for Microsoft-owned GitHub."With unlimited PTO, they don’t have to pay it out. And every study has shown that people don’t take any more with unlimited PTO than the 15 days or whatever they’d get paid otherwise."
