Microsoft and a $5 billion Seattle biotech just unveiled a massive database that reveals 'blind spots' in coronavirus research, and it could help us make better COVID-19 tests and vaccines

and several others, craft vaccine candidates based on genetic information, rather than live samples of the virus. That's allowed them to move particularly quickly.

"You'd probably want to add either some of these genes that are immunogenic that you wouldn't think to add — or a piece of them — to boost the immune response and get a more systemic response focused on the virus itself," Robins said. And the number of COVID-specific T-cells across an large population is "well into the millions," Robins said. Leaning on Microsoft's computing power and machine learning technology, they were able to do traditional research techniques at a scale of 100 times or even 1,000 times typical research.

Antibody testing has become a key focus, a tool that may help identify people who've recovered from COVID-19 and are likely to be protected from the virus.
