10/14/1977 - Mickey Gilley plays piano and records in his own new studio, Gilley's Studio, situated next to Gilley's Club in Pasadena, Texas.Mickey Gilley - the country music star who"introduced the world to Pasadena," Texas -- has died at the age of 86, the mayor of Pasadena announced Saturday.
The Mississippi native moved to Pasadena in 1971, opening the famous honky-tonk nightclub, Gilley's. He created music inspired by the sound of Lousiana's rhythm and blues music with chart-topping hits "Is It Wrong For Loving You","Room Full of Roses,""Don't the Girls All Get Prettier at Closing Time," and the remake of the Soul hit"Stand by Me."
"Pasadena has lost a true legend. Mickey Gilley passed away today, surrounded by his loved ones. It was my great honor to know this man most of my life,' said Jeff Wagner, Mayor of Pasadena, in a May 7 Facebook post."Mickey was a true musical talent who charted 42 singles in the Top 40 Country Charts over a span of two decades.
The movie"Urban Cowboy" and its"runaway success put Houston in a national spotlight that was fun while it lasted and left behind a mystique that, at this point, seems eternal," wrote Chris Gray, a Galveston-based writer in a February 2022 article in Houston Chronicle about theGilley earned numerous awards including six ACM Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and was inducted into the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame, according to media reports.
