Under Michigan law, the involuntary manslaughter charge filed against the parents can be pursued if authorities believe someone contributed to a situation where there was a high chance of harm or death.
Jennifer Crumbley was contacted and subsequently told her son in a text message: “Lol. I’m not mad at you. You have to learn not to get caught,” according to the prosecutor. The Crumbleys failed to ask their son about the gun or check his backpack and “resisted the idea of their son leaving the school at that time,” McDonald said.In a written statement released Saturday, Oxford Community Schools Superintendent Tim Throne for the first time detailed the school’s response to Crumbley’s behavior. At the first meeting with a counselor and a staff member, Crumbley said shooting sports were a hobby for his family, Throne said.
“Given the fact that the child had no prior disciplinary infractions, the decision was made he would be returned to the classroom rather than sent home to an empty house,” he said.The prosecutor, McDonald, also previously argued that Crumbleys’ parents should have told counselors their son had access to a gun when they were called in for a meeting about his behavior.
Ethan accompanied his father for the gun purchase on Nov. 26 and posted photos of the firearm on social media, saying, “Just got my new beauty today,” McDonald said.
I always thought school was a place to learn knowledge to prepare for the future. So now the teachers have to be police counselors and phycologist.
They have security search points at the courthouse, the White House, Capitol Hill, airports even jail. But schools no way regardless of the numerous shootings.

The school is culpable.They should've called the police and made him leave.They should've made their own sociologist and psychologist have sessions with the student, probing his thinking and finding out if he had a gun or access to it. Fire the principal and superintendent.
Don't forget the blame is on the gun. Don't sidestep that with focus on the school. Yes, the fucked up. School politics are very tricky. Teachers are rarely listened to.

Hind sight is definitely 20/20 on the school officials. But they raised the alarm. The parents chose to ignore it and not provide the school with vital information (ie- that they had purchased him a gun recently). I bet if the school knew that, they would have searched him.

School officials bare responsibility for allowing a known threat to stay on their campus. His back pack should have been searched as it must have been in the bag or on campus during the meeting that morning.
Those teachers and counselors knew what they were dealing with & probably could predict an outcome like this. The discipline system is set up to make schools look “good”. One alarming drawing or “empty” threat won’t do it. It has to get physical. You just hope it’s caught in time
