The Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired recently announced the first collaboration between educators, medical professionals, researchers, and service providers in the State of Florida, responding exclusively to Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI).

When her son Lorenzo was diagnosed with Cortical Visual Impairment at three months old, Caterina Sastri was told he was effectively blind. Unfortunately, doctors said there was nothing she could do to change that.CVI, which affects approximately one-third of children with visual impairment

Because of the complex nature of the condition, CVI is often misdiagnosed, and as a result, many with the disorder lack appropriate follow-up care or education plans. However, as Lorenzo’s story demonstrates, early intervention is essential for improving outcomes in early learners.with CVI can improve with early diagnosis, appropriate functional vision assessment, and individualized intervention. With proper care, children with CVI can easily access their world visually.

Blind and sighted children in their inclusion program are learning side-by-side, helping them fulfill their responsibility of helping early learners with visual impairments achieve academic success and gain confidence, despite their vision loss. Ongoing training and support for families and education teams and creating community awareness regarding the unique needs of students with CVI.
