Violence and inequality chase many people in Mexico to seek a better life in the United States. But for others seeking asylum, Mexico offers a measure of peace and prosperity beyond what’s available in their homelands.

an all-time high of 131,400 asylum claims in 2021, led by Hondurans, Cubans and Haitians.

Lower expenses mean more money to send his wife and stepson in Pereira, a city in a coffee-growing region of the Andean foothills. Maria Rosario Blanco, 41, came with her sister and 8-year-old grandnephew, who was riding on the back of his father’s motorcycle in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa in 2019 when an assailant fatally shot his father. Blanco’s nephew was killed a year later while working at his barber shop. The family finally left when a flood destroyed their home.

“The new rule is that people are obligated to join” the gang, she said. “If you refuse, it doesn’t matter. They kill you either way.” Maureen Meyer, the Washington Office for Latin America’s vice president for programs, said Mexico might agree to lesser steps, like more enforcement within its own borders or admitting some migrants who are ordered to leave the United States. Under Title 42, Mexico has taken back migrants from Honduras, Guatemala, El Salvador and, more recently, Venezuela, as well people from Mexico.

Ship all of them back to Mexico and let them deal with it!

amiworthy Last I knew from students I actually spoke with- there was a huge problem with organized gangs and drugs fueling their success.

Three million more people sneaked across the Mexican border while Biden has been President. These “migrants” drive up rents as we all compete for a place to live, depress wages, and commit thefts and other crimes to acquire the necessities and amenities for their better life.

Plus if you go to Mexico you won’t have to deal with loser woke Americans calling you Latinx

Wonderful!! I'm ALL FOR a different system that would help filter people in as well as out. Mexico cb a very good place for retirement and POSITIVE border interactions.

still open 24/7 go and look

Mexico gets more guns from america than anywhere else. Please do a story on all the guns smuggled into mexico from america.

America should not be the relief valve of the world. Who will fix the violence and inequality of the solution is leave?

Well, yeah, it's because they get endless handouts once they're here.

Mexico will stay the corrupt country it is because we allow them to move here and bring their violence with them. Also all their third world diseases.

AP does not inform readers of why Mexico is not housing asylum seekers at its US border.

Wrong there tryin to get to America Mexico just on the way pleas stop spreading lies smh

If you asked most of these illegal Mexicans why they want to come here NONE say to escape violence, they all say they come here to work.. these are not refugees.

Mexico is the 15th strongest economy in the world.

Why the difference in countries separated by an imaginary line? Equal justice, law abiding citizens, and lack of corruption. All things the US politicians are eroding at a fast pace.
