The Mets have hiredbench coach Carlos Mendoza to succeed Buck Showalter in Queens as the team's next manager, as Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman of The New York Post reported.
Mendoza went through multiple rounds of interviews with Mets owner Steve Cohen and president of baseball operations David Stearns, and impressed during those discussions. Mendoza, 43, spent the past four seasons as Aaron Boone's bench coach in the Bronx. He had coached in the Yankees' organization since 2009.
Unlike when they brought in the highly experienced Showalter, who was let go after the 2023 season, this will be Mendoza's first managerial gig in the major leagues. Despite Counsell being the front runner, as well as his tight connection to Stearns, the Mets ultimately chose to hire Mendoza. According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, Counsell will not be returning to the Milwaukee Brewers either, he will be going to a team that already has a manager.
