The MetroHealth System has determined that an employee inappropriately accessed patient medical records over several years, the hospital system said. Disciplinary action was immediately taken.CLEVELAND, Ohio — A MetroHealth System employee has been disciplined for inappropriately accessing patient medical records since 2008, the health system announced Monday.
about 1,700 patients were affected by a privacy breach stemming from an upgrade to the health system’s electronic medical records, MetroHealth said. When some patient records were released, data pertaining to different patients also appeared in those records. “To date, we have no evidence that any information has been misused as a result of this incident,” MetroHealth said in a statement. “Disciplinary action was immediately taken in accordance with the System’s human resources policies.”
MetroHealth has notified all patients whose records were affected by this latest incident, in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act , the health system said. Those affected can call a toll-free information line at 866-547-6908 with questions and concerns.
