MetroHealth President and CEO Akram Boutros, who had led the hospital system for nearly 10 years, was fired Monday night by the Board of Trustees, saying Boutros had given himself more than $1.9 million in unauthorized bonuses.

Trustees were unaware of the bonuses, the statement says, which are violation of Boutros’ contract.

Boutros has repaid the hospital system $2.1 million for the bonuses, which includes interest. Boutros also has reported his actions to the Ohio Ethics Commission.
