A Metro employee who tried to stop a man targeting commuters Wednesday morning was shot and killed on the platform of the Potomac Avenue Metro station in a shooting spree that also injured three others.

One person was taken into custody by D.C. police, authorities said at a news conference outside the station in Southeast Washington. Police said there were four victims, including the Metro worker who was fatally shot. Two others were conscious and breathing after being shot in the legs, police said, while another person suffered a hand injury.

Officials shut down part of Pennsylvania Avenue SE and closed access to the Metrobus stop and the Potomac Avenue station. Metro also suspended rail service on the Orange, Blue and Silver lines between the Federal Center SW station and the Minnesota Avenue and Benning Road stations. The transit agency advised commuters to use Metrobus Route 30 as an alternative.

Jennings said the gunman then went down to the fare gate, where more shots rang out. He said he turned around and ran back up the escalator and yelled at other commuters to run because of the shooting. Systemwide, including on trains and at stations, transit police last year investigated 195 aggravated assaults, which include shootings, a tally that was up 14 compared to a year earlier.Wednesday’s shooting follows another on Jan. 11, when two young children and a man were shot while exiting a Metrobus in Northwest Washington after an altercation that began onboard. That incident began on the 54 route as the bus traveled up 14th Street near Fort Stevens Drive.

Every hour on the hour, everyday another shooting.

Oh man, my heart goes out to the friends and family of that Metro employee. I used to commute to work on the DC Metro system.

You can count on 3 things.... he is not a legal gun owner, he should have been in jail because of multiple crimes, he has mental issues.... let's see if I'm right
