Many of the protein shapes are from organisms that are completely unknown to science.

Scientists at Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, have used an artificial intelligence language model to predict the unknown structures of more than 600 million proteins belonging to viruses, bacteria and other microbes.

Despite proteins quickly and reliably taking certain shapes once they've been produced, the number of possible configurations is roughly 10^300.
