Memorial Day weekend in Chicago traditionally has marked the start of a spike in street violence that lasts throughout the summer. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson campaigned on a policy platform calling for changes to the city’s approach to street violence.

And it comes in the wake of downtown youth disturbances earlier this year that again placed an unwanted spotlight on Chicago. As part of its anti-violence efforts, the city will “increase its presence across the city and on the lakefront this summer,” Johnson’s office announced. His office also touted $2.5 million funding from the Partnership for Safe and Peaceful Communities for anti-violence efforts, part of an effort that’s been ongoing since 2016.

But Johnson, who was sworn in less than two weeks ago, must also balance short-term efforts with longer term solutions and has sought to allay concerns that he would “defund the police.” Before taking office, Johnson announced, bringing stability to the department. “They go out and they do their work, they communicate with us in some ways but we don’t ask that they tell us everything that they do,” Waller said. “But we see the areas where the violence doesn’t happen, those are the areas that they’re in.”
