Joe Sullivan, a recent graduate of Medford High School, is 18 and has Down syndrome, and got a job at Bitty & Beau’s late in July, according to theTwo weeks after he started, a 23-secondof Sullivan receiving his first paycheck was posted to the company’s TikTok page, featuring coworkers cheering and Sullivan jumping up and down in excitement.Sullivan’s mother, Tonya Sullivan, told the Globe her son plans to spend the money on holiday shopping.
Bitty & Beau’s Coffee was started in January of 2016 in Wilmington, N.C., by Amy and Ben Wright, who have four children, two of whom were born with Down syndrome, and a third with autism, according to the company’sThe first coffee shop employed 19 people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, and since then the coffee shop chain has grown to include 23 shops across 12 states with more than 200 employees — including the location in Melrose — according to the website.
