[+]The Duchess of Sussex wrote in the op-ed published Wednesday that on a morning in July this year, as she embarked on her daily routine and tended to her son, one-year-old Archie, she “felt a sharp cramp”.

“I knew, as I clutched my firstborn child, that I was losing my second,” the former actress wrote, before describing the “unbearable grief” that her and her husband, Prince Harry, experienced. “Despite the staggering commonality of this pain, the conversation remains taboo, riddled with shame, and perpetuating a cycle of solitary mourning,” Markle, 39, wrote, as she reflected on one of her most candidshe gave as a senior royal during her and Harry’s 2019 tour of South Africa that revealed some of the challenges the couple had faced under the spotlight.

In a call to action to look out for one another over the holidays, Markle used that interview’s central question—"Are you OK?”— as a means to reflect on her experience of miscarriage and the “loss and pain” that has “plagued every one of us in 2020”.
