After a college career riddled with injury and burnout, Sam Diaz clinched a spot in Atlanta at her marathon debut.

In her Trials pursuit, Diaz found unexpected fulfillment in the process of preparing for the marathon distance. While training for an event that she never imagined she’d pursue—especially after feeling the sting of burnout at the college level—Diaz learned how to fly her own path.On the track, Diaz was a versatile teammate for the Reno Wolfpack.

When she graduated in the spring of 2014 with a degree in wildlife ecology and conservation, Diaz stopped running and moved to Jackson, where she pursued other activities like mountain biking. She also put her education to use when she started working at the Teton Raptor Center. Two years later in 2016, Diaz’s friends asked her if she wanted to join them in a local trail race called the

, which has an elevation gain of 4,139 feet over the 6.1-mile course. At the time, Diaz was only mountain biking for exercise, but decided to join them anyway.During the race, she surprised herself with the fitness that she gained from scaling mountains on her bike at altitude. As she tore through the single track, leading the women’s field on her way up, Diaz remembered how much she loved the thrill of competition.
