Kathryn Hunter gets a blazing cinematic showcase as all three of the witches in The Tragedy of Macbeth. HWD goes inside her incredible transformation:

we can at last say the same of a Kathryn Hunter screen role. While she’s racked up occasional film and TV credits, including the HBO seriesthis marks her true cinematic arrival. In the acclaimed–directed Shakespeare adaptation, she brings an otherworldly power to her two brief scenes as the Three Witches , putting her stamp on some of the text’s most enduring, beautiful passages.“I’ve known Kathryn for almost 30 years and have wanted to work with her since I met her,” says Coen.

Kathryn Hunter became the first British woman to professionally play King Lear at this Young Vic production in 1997.After all that research, I should be used to Hunter living in a small box on my laptop. Yet I can hardly recognize her through my Zoom screen because she’s, well, herself.

In that way, Hunter showcases what McDormand calls an “insatiable appetite” for craft and character. Take her sold-out 2009 showat the Young Vic, adapted from Franz Kafka’s “A Report to an Academy,” in which an ape learns to behave as a human. Hunter played a monkey to rapturous praise, having studied the animal with precision: the pelvis low to the ground, the strong legs supporting it, the way it would speak if it could .

“I fell in love with chimpanzees. You spend many hours in zoos looking at them and how they move their arms and their look and gazing into their eyes,” she reflects. “I remember at one point somebody said, ‘Did you not feel a bit insulted to be asked to play a chimpanzee?’ And I went, ‘On the contrary, I found it wonderful—really, really, really wonderful and quite extraordinary—to discover a kind of kinship.

Before production, Taymor had the idea of running workshops for kids, over several weeks, that explored the meaning of fairies to Shakespeare. Hunter partnered with her, proving essential to their success. “She has such an extraordinary imagination and ability to communicate and work with other people,” Taymor says. “I knew that this was going to be the most fun part of doingfinding who that character was—the shape shifter, the master of ceremonies, the androgynous clown, the elder….
