Nearly 50 years later, the city is looking to celebrate and commemorate its role in movie history by commissioning a dedicated sculpture. The city announced Wednesday in a news release that it has signed a contract with artist Susan Norris. The artwork, to be installed at the southeast corner of Tennessee and Virginia streets, will portray the lovable eponymous mutt. It be unveiled in a ceremony next February. A screening of the movie is also scheduled.
The movie was the first in a series about Benji the dog. It was written, produced and directed by Joe Camp and grossed $45 million on a budget of $500,000, the city said. Its theme song received an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song, accordingThe statue will be funded by the city, and administered by the McKinney Arts Commission and the Daisy Riddle Family in memory of their beloved dog, the city said..
