Mayor Adams addresses police diversity following Tyre Nichols case

is now shining a light on police culture across the nation, including in New York.

Mayor Eric Adams addressed the topic, saying that diversifying police departments across the nation would allow the level of policing all citizens deserve. It's something the mayor says the NYPD is already doing. "When we want to diversify departments, it's not only African American. We have increasing number of members from the AAPI community, Spanish-speaking officers, Muslim officers. Their role was to ensure that you diversify departments, so the officers are coming from the communities that they represent. Diversity still is the key," says Adams.

The five officers accused in the beating of Nichols have been fired and now face up to 60 years in prison if convicted of second-degree murder.

Defunding police has caused many issue, young inexperience, working more hours to covet short staff. Get every Police Department in the country back to full staff and then do the training that needs to be done

CT Diversifying is fine, the actions of police, as we’ve seen recently with those 5 cops, all African Americans, who killed an African American. The police should get proper training so as to not kill people. No reason for brutality either, especially if a suspect is handcuffed!

we have been down this road with gun control legislation and its apparent this has not worked 😑 diversity is good but with lack of proper supervision and guidance the shooting ,deaths by police & beatings has not stopped.Hire qualified police managers to over see the operations

LI We have seen time and time again of why diversity hires are not good. Filling positions just for checking a box has caused more problems then they fix.

Blacks are taught to hate the police, to not trust them. So when they get older, none of them want to join a police force, and arguably be on the 'other side,' kind of like an Uncle Tom. NYPD has to go door-to-door asking minorities to take the test.

Didn't work so well in Memphis. The problem is not policing. There are some bad apples but overall policing is doing just fine. We have to teach our kids to respect and not run from police. It leads to awful situations.

LI Longer training, like 2 years in the EU v. the 5 months here. Require BA degree. Mental health assoc. responding to non-violent crisis calls instead of cops. Most of all, change the mentality of 'cop = warrior.' They're employed to serve & protect not collect a check & kill.
