Mavs center James Donaldson talks Mavs-Wolves, West finals vs. Lakers

James Donaldson was an NBA All-Star in 1988, the first Western Conference finals run for Dallas and the ‘Reunion Rowdies.’

It takes me back to – there have been great players who have the ability to make great moments like that. I think of the guys I played with back in the day, Larry Bird and Michael Jordan and Kareem , Magic Johnson taking over a game in the NBA Finals.“Those are signature moments that you never, ever forget. You never know when to expect it because it just comes and I don’t even know if the great players are expecting it, but they are in that zone.

“But they had Kareem, and Kareem was already in his late 30s and 40s, still at the prime of his game, and he was the difference maker. Even though I could play some good defense on him, I could make him take shots he didn’t want to take, he would still hit the big ones when it counted., still in my dreams, I can see it. Shooting over my head and we’re both coming down, back down to the court, to the ground, and looking over my shoulder and it just nestles into the net.

“And so that was the question going in, Kyrie now, he’s maturing. He’s still a great, great player. He doesn’t need to be the man, doesn’t need to take all the big shots. Luka can do those things.“All the super teams had a Batman and Robin kind of combo, Michael had Scottie , Kareem had Magic, all those guys. And so that’s what you need. And that’s when you really have a team that’s matured.
