COLUMBUS, Ohio— Senate President Matt Huffman’s campaign gave maximum contributions to several Republicans challenging allies of House Speaker Jason Stephens in the days leading up to last month’s primary election, new campaign-finance records show.
Salvo, Mathews, and Workman ended up unseating three pro-Stephens incumbents: state Reps. Brett Hillyer of Tuscarawas County, Jon Cross of Findlay and Gail Pavliga of Portage County, respectively. In addition to Huffman’s contributions, several anti-Stephens Republicans gave to GOP primary opponents of pro-Stephens incumbents. The contributors included state Reps. Brian Stewart of Pickaway County, Adam Bird of Clermont County, Phil Plummer of Montgomery County, and Ron Ferguson of Jefferson County, among others.
Meanwhile, the Ohio House Republican Alliance – the House GOP’s campaign arm that Stephens controls – spent more than $522,000 between March 7 and April 3 on media buys for the March 19 primary, according to the Ohio Secretary of State’s campaign-finance website.
