With an estimated diameter of 18.6 miles, it boasts a solid nucleus surrounded by a fuzzy cloud of gas known as a coma.

The formation of these distinctive "horns" is closely linked to the comet's irregular nucleus shape, as explained by, a BAA astronomer. An outflowing gas is likely partially obstructed by a notch protruding from the nucleus, resulting in the peculiar shape of the coma. Currently hurtling towards the inner solar system, 12P/Pons-Brooks will slingshot around the Sun in its highly elliptical 71-year orbit. Its closest approach to Earth is anticipated on April 21, 2024, making it potentially visible to the naked eye before returning to the outer solar system. This is the second time this year that 12P has sported its "horns," with the previous occurrence on July 20, after a 69-year dormancy.
