An international study involving reveals hundreds of major methane leaks linked to the global exploitation of oil and gas

. A quarter of anthropogenic emissions of this greenhouse gas come from the global exploitation of coal, oil and natural gas, of which CHhad already exposed, based on the case of the United States, the vast underestimation in official inventories of emissions related to the extraction and distribution of oil and gas. A discrepancy which could be explained by sporadic undeclared releases of large quantities of methane by operators in the sector.

and associated with the company Kayrros, quantified worldwide the most abundant methane emissions released into the atmosphere by the hydrocarbon sector. These may be accidental discharges or related to maintenance operations which lead to very large leaks. For this, the researchers systematically analyzed thousands of images produced daily for two years by ESA’s Sentinel-5P satellite.

Carte des émetteurs. Map showing the location of the main gas pipelines and the main sources of methane emissions related to the oil and gas industry © Kayrros Inc., Esri, HERE, Garmin, FAO, NOAA, USGS, OpenStreetMap contributors, and the GIS User Community Corresponding to 10% of the estimated emissions from the sector, these observations are only the tip of the iceberg, as the satellite is only capable of systematically detecting the most massive plumes, which are also the most intermittent . The study shows that these massive releases are not random and chaotic, but detected systematically above certain oil and gas extraction sites.

But would plugging these “leaks” be so costly for operators to justify such practices? By taking into account the societal costs underlying the impacts on climate and air quality as well as the price of lost gas, the study shows on the contrary that limiting them would be synonymous with billions of dollars of net savings for the countries responsible for it.

lathrop_don So that’s what happened to those southern states.

Is it just me or is the link to the study absent?

Another reminder to accelerate the clean power revolution! 🌞

High concentrations of Chipotle restaurants?

With out any regs. Just think how bad it would be. That the industry has mitigated methane release.

Amazing graph and a powerful tool to take a fast response in order to stop it. With this awesome technology, the governments of the countries around the world must to protect the environment.

So then, what are you doing about it? Investigate US Pat8456027 . Just do it. Air, Water, Gravity , and just a kiss of stored Sunlight. Don’t be afraid.👍🏼

You need to see the methane leaks on this map and help us pivot away to renewables faster. We need to lay offshore wind cables in the Pacific NOW. DebHaalandNM JoeBiden SecGranholm GavinNewsom PaulKoretzCD5 CD6Nury BenAllenCA KarenBassLA KatyForLA

To be fair that can't all be from Gordon.

Satellite images show biggest methane leaks come from Russia and USNearly a tenth of the oil and gas industry’s global methane emissions have been found to come from a group of “ultra-emitter” sites located mostly in Russia and the US Now if anyone doesn't see the Bitcoin mining opportunities presented must be blind. Not mentioned in the headline: due to the nature of the tech used it wasn't possible to track emissions in China. But useful information nonetheless But don’t forget to turn your engine off when idling

NPR Cookie Consent and ChoicesYup. This isn't new information right? Those companies don't give a rats ass about the environment and they will skirt every law or safety precaution. 'Capitalism will find a solution to the climate crisis!' Capitalism is the climate crisis, and will not solve itself. Instead of Biden to focus on things like this, Guess claiming superior means more to him. Misplaced priorities!!! 😔😔😔
